When standing right on the edge of the East Maui Volcano inside of Haleakala National Park it feels almost impossible to show or convey the wonder of this place. This has been a holy site to native peoples for thousands of years and remains so today. As I was waiting for the sun to come up above the cloud inversion, I zoomed in to a small area on the far left of the crater. I wanted to highlight the contrast between the soft clouds and warm yellow pre-day light with the sharp and jagged rocks of the volcano.

I went up the afternoon before I hiked around looking for the best possible location for sunrise. I was standing outside the next morning in this spot just about two hours before sunrise. You must come early to get this type of image. At over 10k feet most morning you are above the clouds, as was the case on this August morning. Watching the sun come up through the clouds and light the cinder-cone volcano in front of you is a truly awesome adventure.

I came up a few mornings in a row to ensure I would be able to get a photo, but I was super lucky to get something this amazing!
