It's challenging to truly capture the majesty of a sunrise on top of the East Maui Volcano inside of Haleakalā National Park. This is an attempt at doing just that. This image is almost 400 megapixels, taken with over 16 images. The sun is already over the horizon however it was still below the clouds! The sky was an insane yellow and the warm blue hour light extended across the crater below. To give a sense of scale and size, from where I’m standing to the bottom of the crater is almost 2,500 feet and still above the clouds. The crater is marked with long dead cinder cone volcanoes.

I went up the afternoon before and hiked around looking for the best possible location for sunrise. I was standing outside the next morning in this spot just about two hours before sunrise. You must come early to get this type of image. At over 10k feet most morning you are above the clouds, as was the case on this August morning. Watching the sun come up through the clouds and light the cinder-cone volcano in front of you is a truly awesome adventure.

I came up a few mornings in a row to ensure I would be able to get a photo, but I was super lucky to get something this amazing!
