The first thing we did once we got settled in Maui was drive to the top of Haleakala. I really wanted to capture something amazing for sunset so on the the way up we stopped and studied every pull off and the area around them to see what we could do for sunset. For sunrise you really want to be near or at the top of the crater. However, as it happens the Haleakala Highway has a wonderful western facing view making it perfect for sunset.

On this night in Maui I was not disappointed by my view, there were just enough clouds below us to make it super interesting. I captured a series of photos throughout sunset and into the blue hour to create this time-blend photo. We were so high up that the rays from the sun washed over the top of the clouds and turned the haze into a warm yellow / orange color. You can see all the way down to the ocean. The last bit of light was hitting the trees directly below me. I could not have asked for a nicer welcome to the island of Maui.
