“Fortune favors the prepared mind” is a quote I’ve known since grade school; it is very applicable to landscape photography. While the afternoons and evenings where not great for shooting photos I spent hours hiking the dunes, looking for locations and making notes on my map.

Leaving my warm car for the frigid cold in the darkness before dawn I made my way to this location. As the blue hour came upon us and we could see the clouds in the sky I knew we had something. That night’s wind swept the dunes clean of footprints and I settled into this composition. At the base of the valley on the desert floor, surrounded by dunes and a field of Yucca Plants in front of me. Knowing where the sun would rise, I was able to capture an amazing sun star through the plant itself. The landscape bathed in warm yellow light on the white sand and the sky came alive with color.
