The largest cliff dwellings in North America can be found tucked away in Southwestern Colorado in Mesa Verde National Park. Cliff Palace is the largest of all the cliff dwellings. Build by the Ancestral Puebloans sometime around 1190 AD. It took over 20 years for all the major building to be constructed.

We have done the tours down into the dwellings and they were some of the most fun adventures we have had in any national park. They are all guided tours where not only you get to see the dwellings up close, but you can learn an incredible amount of the history of these special places.

As beautiful as these structures are, they present a massive problem to photograph. I spent an entire afternoon walking the rim across from Cliff Palace. My goal was to give a sense of place, scale, and wonder to this remarkable location. Direct sunlight only hits around mid-day and is harsh with dark shadows. I waited until the end of the day and have relied on reflected light. This creates a soft, consistent feel to the image.
