In the middle of Rocky Mountain National Park you find the Alpine Ridge Visitors center. Here you start a very short hike (just 3 tenths of a mile) that climbs 200 vertical feet in 225 stone steps that leads to this amazing viewpoint. We arrived long before sunrise and I made the quick hike in the dark. I had a rather long wait for the sun to rise and it was a fair bit cold and very windy at the top. My daughter being a true champion opted to wait in the warmth and comfort in the car. We talked via two way radio until she finally decided she had waited long enough hand she ran up the 225 steps.

The long wait in the cold was well worth it once the sun rose and illuminated the foreground and mountains. Their where just enough clouds to turn an amazing yellow color and the high alpine tundra was bathed in soft yellow light. The image was taken at the height of fall in the Rockies and at 12,000 feet you can almost feel the warm light breaking through the cold night in the image.
