The North Cascades National Park in Washington State is broken down into two distinct sections. There is both a northern and southern unit with the Ross Lake National Recreation Area bisecting the two units. The National Recreation Area is by far and away the most popular area for people to visit and this is where we spent several days camping.

The area is truly stunning with hundreds of creeks in the high mountains flowing down into the lakes and the Skagit River below. The creeks carry with them what locals call “glacial flour” or finely ground rock particles. When they enter the lake, they give the water a turquoise hue as the powder remains suspended in the water. This image is a truly massive 400+ mega pixel view of Diablo Lake. You can see the dam and the power lines far below supplying power to the Seattle area. The sun had just crested the horizon and the first hint of lights started to hit the snowcapped mountains in the distance.
