In the early morning we made our way deep into the Quinault Rain Forest and found something astonishing. Even at this low elevation it was so cold the night before, ice had formed over the landscape. I knew I had to work quickly, as soon as the sunlight hit the ground everything would melt away.

I found the remains of an old tree, with new moss still growing on what was left of the trunk. The ferns were covered with ice and the green mountains in the background added a wonderful color contrast to the scene. I went for a longer exposure to allow some motion in the clouds.
