It was springtime in the Pacific Northwest and the weather had lived up to its reputation. It had rained on and off for the entire week we were there. In the last afternoon the rain stopped, and I made the long hike up the soft dunes and over the sandstone to this incredible vantage point. On top of the cliffs, I had a view of the sea stacks, rock formations and maybe most impressive the crashing waves below. In front of me the sun was starting to drop in the sky and sunset was only an hour away. To my right a massive rainstorm was working its way quickly towards me. I could see the bands of rain in the distance and the clouds change from light to very dark.

I used the last light of day as well as a stack of ND filters to create the work. The rock directly in front of me was glowing from the last bit of sun that was making its way through the clouds. As you pan across the scene it turns dark with the coming storm. The long exposure and the drastic change from light to dark creates an almost ominous feeling and makes this one of my favorite photographs.
