When you venture deep into the bamboo forest on the Pipiawai Trail even during midday, it can become very dark. The forest is incredibly dense.  Here I found a solo area being lit with the entire rest of the frame in shadow. I framed the one brown, older tree in the front, with the sunlight hitting the four green trees directly behind. The contrast between the foreground and background really set this image apart.

The Pipiwai Trail is part of Haleakala National Park however, it’s not connected by any roads to the very popular summit area. This area lays past the town of Hana, it can be a few hours of driving just to get there. This is not a bad thing, as the road to Hana maybe one of the greatest drives anywhere in the world.

The four-mile trail brings you past a series of waterfalls including the Makanhiku Falls and the Waimoku Falls.  Around each waterfall you find a stunning pool of water and at the top you find the Infinity Pool. Along the way you will also pass a truly gigantic banyan tree and cross the river on very small metal bridges.
