Fort Jefferson was initially established as an Historic Monument by FDR back in 1935. It later became a National Park to protect not only the fort but 10 other keys in the area and much of the surrounding waters. Today only 7 keys remain with the other 4 being reclaimed by Mother Nature. The Fort itself sits on Garden Key, the Fort was originally established to protect the highly lucrative trading route that ran through the Keys and up the East Coast. Fort Jefferson was a wonder of “modern construction” when it was built in the mid 1800’s comprised of over 16 million bricks all being brought in on small wooden sailboats.

Camping on the small island gives you a wonderful advantage to explore the park without the crowds of people who come to the park daily on the boat. I found this composition early in the morning when the sun was still below the horizon. Standing on a bridge in front of the main entrance the clouds where cast in the pre-sunrise color and the entire earth was still.
