Manzanita Lake is located adjacent to one of the parks main entrances and is easily accessible. It was formed when the Manzanita Creek was dammed 300 years ago by a rock avalanche from the northwest slope of the Chose Crags. It’s home to a camp ground, camp store, museum and ranger station. Most importantly though it provides stunning views of Lassen Peak.

There is a very easy walking trail that goes around the entire lake. My daughter and I walked the trail a few times, searching for just the right view. Once I found this spot I knew it would be perfect. However we were frustrated with empty boring skies of on first two attempts. However, on our third visit the clouds where amazing and we were given this stunning sunset. You can see the last light of the day on the mountains and tree tops while the sky turns an amazing color.

The stunning still beauty captured in this image is contrasted with its violent and chaotic volcanic past. Lava, fire and destruction formed this landscape we get to enjoy today.
