Finding cracked Mud in Death Valley is such a special treat. In most years the valley hardly gets any rain, so the chance for mud to dry out and crack like this is very rare. The next issue is many of the areas with cracked mud get stepped on and ruined.

I wanted to create an intimate scene and showcase the beauty of this rare and unique natural phenomena. I came to this area, lit by the soft afternoon sun, a lone desert plant breaking through the ground in the bottom right and the still damp from the recent rain sand scattered throughout.
