The sun sets behind the sand dunes about 30 minutes before the ‘real’ sunset time. I was lucky here and the clouds broke up enough to allow for a sun star, while still giving a brilliant yellow color. The last direct light of the day created a warm glow to the sand and developed deep shadows. At the base of the dunes, you can see Medano Creek glowing in the light. When printed you can just make out the tiny people hiking up the dunes which adds a sense of scale to this enormous set of dunes.

These dunes can rise 750 feet from the floor of the San Luis Valley. They cover an area of 30 square miles and contain over 1.2 cubic miles of sand. They are the tallest dunes in North America.
