The Saguaro cactus is the symbolic icon of the American Southwest and the Sonoran desert. The Sonoran Desert is full of amazing and wondrous sights to see and places to explore, nothing though is more magnificent than these towering cacti. Taking 75 to 100 years before they start to grow arms these giant icons have survived an incredible long time in the harsh desert.  They may grow slowly but they can get very large. 50 feet is not uncommon, the largest ever was 78 feet tall!

I did not want to show the classic image of this plant, lost in a big landscape. I wanted something that was one of a kind, to highlight this special cactus. This square photo taking just after the sun had come over the mountains in Saguaro National Park, shows every bit of amazing detail of the saguaro. When printed you can see each razor-sharp spine, the green color almost glows against the blue morning sky. Taken in spring the small desert flowers are in full bloom and add just a tiny bit of red to contrast the blue and green.
