Sometimes it’s the little things that make for the most impactful photographs. While trekking through the snow in the backcountry of Zion I was fighting to find the perfect photo. The snow was just starting to come down hard and the light was starting to fade. It was surreal, one of the most beautiful locations I’ve ever come across but at the same time the landscape was busy and chaotic.

I saw this little tiny shrub on a small rock ledge. I set up my camera and tripod very low to be level with my main subject. This was taken at a tiny aperture of 1.4, assuring the tree is tack sharp but the background fades away and does not distract from the main image. I was able to have a fast enough shutter speed to stop the motion of the tree from the wind and freeze the snow as it was falling.
