When we traveled to the Badlands National park in early October the weather was supposed to be mild however, southern South Dakota can be wild and unpredictable. While we planned for mild to cool fall days what we were greeted with was bitter cold, early snow and an almost empty park. I’ll make the trade of cold days for lack of crowds all day long. We had the park almost to ourselves and we explored

Sunrise was always the coldest with very high winds most days. We came down from the loop road and started to hike through the lower valley. In the distance I could see the badlands with fresh snow from the night before. I waited for the first light to come down and land on valley before making this photo. The red sky with the warm light creates a wonderful almost warm feeling, even if it was truly was freezing.
