The Scenic Drive is a must do for any trip to Capitol Reef. It’s almost 8 miles of paved rounds and another 6 miles of dirt lead you to some awe-inspiring locations in the park. The Reef and Waterpocket fold present a unique challenge to photographers. While massive and majestic, finding the right locations with the right conditions is a real fight.

After exploring for a few days I came to this stunning vantage point. I had to climb up a bit from the canyon to gain some elevation but it shows a number of great features of the park. The Scenic Drive itself runs through the middle of the frame, in the distance you can see the Moenkopi Formations, the Waterpocket fold and the layers of sedimentary rock of the Colorado Plateau.

I setup so the sun would set on the far left of the image, I was hoping (and was successful) in getting wonderful soft and reflected light on the red sandstone. Just enough clouds hung around through sunset to give color and interest to the sky.
